Streaker Northern Championships
Hornsea Sailing Club, 16th April 2011

After a wind forecast of 2 miles per hour the night before, fewer visitors than expected turned up to sail at Hornsea Mere, but still 25 boats made the start line, representing 13 different clubs from as far away as Tamworth and King’s Lynn. There was no wind at all as the first visitors arrived, but with only half a mile between the Mere and the North Sea, on such a warm morning a sea breeze was always on the cards, and by 11.00am it had arrived. Course setting was difficult for race officer Dave Berger as the new breeze took a while to settle down.

The first race got away cleanly the second time, with National Champion Tom Gillard, in a boat he borrowed from Dave Butler (sounds like a line from American Pie), first to the windward mark, followed by past National Champions Ian Jones and Alan Gillard. Among them were Dave Smith and two of the seven Hornsea sailors, Jeremy Wood and Dave Metcalfe. Tom Gillard and Ian Jones pulled away from the rest of the fleet, leaving Gillard senior with Smith and Metcalfe. Wood dropped back as Ian Bradley came through to join the party. Alan Gillard pulled away into a safe third place, and after Smith sailed through the shallows and had to return, Bradley took fourth place, with Smith just beating Metcalfe.

After lunch the fluky wind was again proving a problem for the race officer, but after a couple of attempts at setting a course, one very similar to the morning’s was set. Again Tom Gillard and Ian Jones showed the rest of the fleet a clean pair of heels. Smith and Metcalfe, front runners in the morning race, were around fifteenth and sixteenth to the first mark, with Smith, on top of this, having to perform a 720 because of a slight collision. Again Tom Gillard stretched out his lead from Ian Jones. Alan Gillard found himself in a battle for third with Ian Bradley, with Bradley coming out on top. John Hollis and Peter Cogill took fifth and sixth.

Race 3 was sailed back-to-back on the same course, and again Tom Gillard showed everyone why he is the National Champion. This time, however, the racing at the front of the fleet was a little closer than in the previous races, though the final result was never in serious doubt. Tom went on to achieve a perfect set of results, with Ian Jones again second. Alan Gillard regained third place from Ian Bradley who was fourth, with Dave Metcalfe fifth and Peter Cogill sixth.

So the three national Champions in the fleet finished one, two and three overall, in age order. Bradley was fourth, Metcalfe fifth and John Hollis sixth.

Hornsea SC always runs a small prize draw, usually for a return of entry fee for one sailor, just as a small token of thanks to everyone for coming to the event, but this year, as the event was the Northern Championship, part of the Sail Register Northern Paddle series, the prize was free entry to the nationals, worth £35 to the winner, which was won by a delighted Graham Nelson from Ouse Amateur Sailing Club. Thank you to all the visitors who came, we hope to see you again next year, you’ll all be very welcome.

Dave Metcalfe
