We sail several classes of boat, but most of the racing now takes place under the umbrella of the handicap Fleet.

Just another Saturday on Hornsea Mere
Last Race Trophy and Last Sailing day of the season.
It is with sadness we hear of the passing of John Rayner.
John had been an active sailor for many years and a member of Hornsea Sailing Club. He had sailed at Filey Sailing Club through the 70s and 80s and attended many an open meeting as well as national events. His sailing passion was for the Osprey, a two man, three sail racing dinghy which he constantly promoted, including a good few years as editor of the Osprey newsletter which gave him the opportunity to exult the benefits of the boat and class.
Many a tales could be told about the outings John had with his valued hobby in the Osprey. Les Green had often sailed with John at some of those open meetings where they enjoyed “roughing it” at the BBQ, to say this was not really to John’s taste was probably an understatement. They also teamed up for the Wednesday night series at Hornsea for many of the later years. A pint after the day or evenings racing was always a joy which John would partake in, joining in the usual after sail social where stories would be exchanged.
Stephen Sharp met John in 1977 at the Osprey national championships at Filey. Steve remembers running down the beach to affect a rescue of the starting gate dory where it had rolled in the violent surf. It took all four crew, John and Steve to right the boat and a further hour, after the crew had been packed off to the clubhouse to await an ambulance, to again wait for the Dory’s trailer. On another occasion, Steve capsized his Osprey at the Chalmers Park meeting at Filey, which resulted in a broken boom. John stepped in to assist offering Steve a spare to continue racing the next day.
Mike Mooney has fond memories of John and his children playing on the beach at Filey with all the families, including Mike’s. The guys kept in touch and met most months. They included John to the end, even collecting him from the care home where he spent his final days. Testament to the friendship which John enjoyed around the sailing scene.
John, as previously mentioned, was an active member at Hornsea. Under the then Commodore, Dave Berger, John took on the important, essential role of acting as one of the clubs trustees. Something we all owe a debt of gratitude to him for, where as one of the trustees, with Dave, they managed to obtain and sign the lease with Wassand Estate on behalf of the club. A real milestone in the club’s history.
It is fair to say, John was a lovely, social man who would step up to offer his help where he could. His passion for sailing over the years produced many a memory for those who knew him. Wether competing at events or as a visitor, there were always plenty of people who would greet John as the popular, kind gentleman he was. The passing of John is a sad day for all those lives he touched, for Hornsea sailing club and the Osprey class.
Our thoughts go out to Elizabeth and John’s family for their sad loss. He will sadly be missed.
