Welcome to Hornsea Sailing Club

Hornsea Mere is owned by Wassand Estate Trust and leased to the Hornsea Mere Marine Company. It has been the home of Hornsea Sailing Club for over 50 years. The Club, which is affiliated to the RYA, organizes an extensive racing programme and offers a base for those who wish to use the lake for cruising. It is open 7 days a week from early April to late October, from early morning to early evening (but see posted notice re-closure time for that day) and also on Wednesday evenings from early May to late August.

Hornsea Mere was originally an inlet from the sea but deposits from coastal erosion further north produced a landlocked lake. The Mere is Yorkshire's largest fresh water lake having in excess of 250 acres of navigable water and is set amidst outstanding scenery. It is very safe - in fact one of the safest sailing waters in the region - but should anyone get into difficulties the Hornsea Mere Marine Company provides a permanent recovery service.

For racing ...

Club racing is organized for five main classes: Mirrors, Fireflies, Enterprises, Swordfish and Ospreys; also for a handicap dinghy fleet. The racing programme is divided into three points series - spring, summer and autumn - interspersed with several special events such as cup races and open meetings. Racing takes place on Sunday afternoons throughout the season and Wednesday evening and Sunday mornings during the summer months.

... or just sailing for pleasure

Although much of its activities revolve around racing, the club equally welcomes those who do not wish to compete but simply enjoy sailing for pleasure. New junior members are particularly encouraged, with the more experienced sailors always keen to offer help and guidance. The club has two main social functions each year - a fitting out supper in April and the prize giving dinner in November. Several informal functions are also held during the winter months.

For newcomers to the sport....

Sailing is a safe and relatively inexpensive sport. Newcomers can choose boats and equipment that matches their budget, usually starting with a second hand boat. See our training, crewing opportunities and boat hire/buying sections.

... and newcomers to the club

If you would like more information or to arrange membership, please come along to the Mere on any Sunday afternoon during the season or contact our club secretary - we will be very pleased to have you aboard and we will give you all the help and support we can!

Even though our lake is the largest in Yorkshire, we regret that for safety reasons catamarans and ultra high performance asymmetric's (laser 5000's, 49ers etc.), are not permitted.
