| This is the Autumn Cups
series - Nik
Nak trophy for Streakers and Cups for Fireflies and Handicap classes. Sailed
on Sunday 3/10/2010, the day was very wet from the start with winds from F2-3
gusting up to F5 at times, principally Southerly, with large wind bends
around the South shore. Recent rains had thankfully restored some depth to
the Mere! Best two results to count. The wind held up, and the first
afternoon race enabled some pretty fast reaches and lots of gybes. There were
again a few casualties and the wind strength was just on the manageable side
for the beats, for Sheila and me. However there were some dramas, including
Stuart sailing the whole race without a forestay, in constant fear of he mast
buckling on the beats. More was to come. In the interval between races, Sheila decided (very wisely as it happens, and just in time) that maybe she probably wouldn't enjoy the next race. A lightning dash home by Rob Froud (it was his regular helm Chris Bell's Officer of the Day duty today) presented me with the additional weight needed to make his race more comfortable - well that's not quite true - possible more like! Gusts we had a plenty - as well as three spills (skilfully and speedily righted by Rob – Cheers Rob!), some rope snags and the odd falling-out-of the boat thrills. Comment from Rob "I've never been so fast in an Albacore!” as well as the acceleration in some of the gusts catching yours truly occasionally off balance. At one point there were just two boats upright and many decided to call it a day before the shortened two lap race was completed rather than face gear breakage. Thankfully the race was halved in length and we romped home ahead of Stuart in the leading Streaker (he'd swapped boats between races). Hannah gallantly set off on her second lap, having gone over a number of times, after we'd come ashore. We three boats were the only finishers. "You can only learn about heavy weather sailing if you get out there and do it!" A splendid outing, soaking for all and gear failure for some. Dave Berger |
