Report by Tim Heaton, Blaze Association.

Two big misunderstandings (by me!) and a promise that I would attend, led to a great day of competitive Blaze sailing yesterday at Hornsea Sailing Club.

Firstly, Pip Warner promised the best racing weather conditions in the UK". I should have realised this actually meant "the least worse" as the wind was fitful, shifty and it even delayed, by its disappearance, the restart of racing after lunch .......which was kindly laid on for the event.

Secondly, I flash read the event title as "Hornsea Spritzers" so I was expecting a bit of Sparkling Fizz instead of the "Hornsea Sprints".

The planned format was up to 9 short races, all consisting of a sausage and triangle with a 3-2-1 start sequence. No discards!

The changing wind conditions were a challenge for the RO who masterly managed to change things around to keep the windward leg as a beat. And quickly started each race after the previous one finished.

7 races were completed in the day, including one General Recall. The closeness of the racing can be seen in that all four boats racing won races, and three boats won two races each. The final points were close with the top two tying on points, only remedied by counting first positions.

Overall, the results were:

Pip Warner
Andy  Gilding
Tim Heaton
Sammi Warner

The keys to success on these short races were a great start and reading the wind shifts and wind patches correctly.

Sammi, Pip's daughter, was beaming ear to ear as she beat her father three times! And this was after her not being sure she was going to race and in a borrowed boat. Come on, Pip and Dad, this is a lady who needs a permanent Blaze!

I had some spot on starts and some lucky windshifts but quickly paid the price of a couple of bad starts and more importantly, often misreading the wind shifts.

So a great days racing and a huge welcome from all at the club......Thanks, Pip, for inviting me.....hopefully next year there will be more Blazes attending.

Thank you Hornsea!
