Sunday sailing 20th May 2012

What a contrast to last week's howling gale! - still a reasonable amount of wind, but quite manageable, though 2 races single-handed for both the Albacore and the Firefly sailors proved enough, so Paul and Dave joined forces for the last race, to do battle on the water with Chris Bell and Rob Froud.

The morning's Pursuit turned into a procession with Rob Parnaby storming off and extending his lead on the fleet throughout the race - he ended up around one whole long leg (to #3) ahead of the other Streakers, with Pip just not able to catch him. Rob's new boat has clearly given him more than just an edge! However things were not to go all his own way for both races in the afternoon. Rob won the first afternoon race, and indeed apart from the Blaze, Streakers pretty much had things their own way, however Pip, having donned his new sail, showed a clean pair of heels in the second afternoon race. Chris Bell demonstrated how to catch the breeze on the reach to #4, drawing well ahead of us in the other Albacore - we made some inroads into the lead he's made on us, but Chris gained 7th in both races, whereas we only managed 8, and I one my own 10th.

These were the last two races of this series, which was scheduled as a 16 race series, but 2 races were not sailable, so of the 14, 8 were needed to qualify and 8 results would be counted. This meant that Pip just won the series, with Hannah, who before discards was leading, coming in just 2 points adrift. Rob P had not taken delivery of his boat for some of the early races or the final tally might well have been different. Mike Knight is also showing how far he's progressed and is now snapping at the heels of the rest of the Streaker group.

Stephen Sharp played kites with the idea he might take some aerial photos but decided the risk of crashing his camera and rig in the variable northerly wind was just too great - and there I was posing around #9 just for the camera! Andy Gilding had attempted the Yorkshire 3 Peaks on Saturday and managed 2 of them before his "screaming" knees cried "enough". Armchair/overcoat sailing was the order of the day for him today.

Thomas and Tobias brought down their new-to-them Laser 3000, collected yesterday and had fun finding out where all the bits of string go, however not having yet insured it, they were "advised" they should not sail it. Aden Levitt with dad crewing was out in their Enterprise and managing the tricky conditions very well, with due consideration for parked Albacores! (well especially Chris' which looks very splendid and shiny) on his return approach to the jetty.

The next two weekends comprise the Spring End Series - 6 races with 4 to count - at least on of which needs to be a Pursuit.

Sunday 13th May

Well a degree of warmth has arrived at last with some splendid winds today. Not for the faint-hearted it would appear, but that didn't deter Steve and Dominic from York from rigging their Merlin Rocket and eventually launching it, with Dominic (the son) at he blunt end. They've had some experience in Lasers, and recently had some training at Rutland Water. They managed a bit of reaching to and fro, having with help mastered rigging this fiendishly complex boat – more string than an \Albacore and Osprey combined! Mike Hood stood by after the inevitable dunking, and after some attempts to right the boat, once they'd got in towards the reeds, and back upright escorted them back to the shore. Not dismayed or put off, we hope they'll make the trip again!

Stephen discovered he was race officer, which gave him an excellent reason for not sailing. Sheila decided the conditions were not for her, and got a lift home from Tricia Bell's niece, which left me to persuade someone to sail with me in some boat or another! Whilst the Albacore is a brilliant heavy weather boat, the chance to play spinnakers in a F6 wind was too much to resist, with Stephen willing to lend me his Osprey and now regular crew, Andy.  An early launch and accompanying practice left us without an accurate start time  so the rest of the fleet were half a lap ahead before we started the course. First downwind leg and the spinny went up, though not quite all the way, but we managed the leg and flew! And on the drop it went straight back into the chute rather than under the bow – Result!! Towards the end of the next beat, I noticed the mainsheet was badly frayed through so would not go out through the blocks next rounding – making  dropping the mainsail a no-brainer – we limped back under jib and Stephen bought a new piece of rope!!!! the benefits of an on-site chandlery! So – three starters, two finishers and Hannah the clear winner by over 3 minutes on corrected time.

Second afternoon race I expected to be able to build on our ”practice” in the first race, however in checking the knots on the new mainsheet before the start, I managed to engineer our first capsize with Andy doing a brilliant backflip, narrowly missing the centreboard with his head as he got separated from the boat. Up and off again only a short while after the hooter, we had to catch Hannah and Pip and end up a round ahead of them to be in with a chance. Pip was storming down the mere and easily rounded the furthest mark and shot back on a broad reach to #1. We hoisted the  spinny and  in pulling on the power ,were overpowered, so managed our second capsize of this race. Again we self-recovered, by which time Pip had decided, being at the club end of the mere to stop while the going was good. We roared down the reaches, and slogged up the beats for three full rounds, but were unable to catch Hannah on the water even. Great sport, and Hannah is clearly “Queen of the heavy weather with two firsts and a second in results from today's escapades. Well done!!

Sunday 6th May 2012

A good day for a sail today - in marked contrast to the previous Sunday which was a tempest with lashing rain and cold with it - to the extent that no safety cover was feasible, and hence no sailing. Only a few (fool?)Hardy souls arrived, and an impromptu discussion ensued in the cafe over tea and scones rather than a wetting in the open air. Dave and Tobias set off later in search of kitesurfing at Fraisthorpe, but arrived just too late to see the one and only kitesurfer, along with the one and only windsurfer both just come in to pack up, having exhausted themselves with wind, wet and cold.

The afternoon, whilst still pretty cold, produced a little more wind and, although the generally Easterly wind direction meant a broad reaching start to all raced today (which is never good news for the faster boats, who then take at least half a lap or more to pull clear), the two Albacores and (to a lesser extent) the Firefly had a bit of a look-in on handicap. Thanks to Alan Beck for OD-ing. Good to see John Barber afloat and enjoying his new-to-him Comet - purchased at the Dinghy exhibition - much easier to manage afloat and ashore single-handed than his SWORDFISH ( number 50 - and up for sale - having been restored by Dave Butler at the end of last season). The Levitts were also to be seen with Aden making his Dad jump about in the front end, putting their new Enterprise through its paces. Tobias was grounded - revising for exams in a few weeks.

Race Report 22-4-2012

Sunday's sailing was characterised by very changeable winds, both in direction and strength. There was a decent-ish breeze for most of the morning's pursuit, and Pip Warner made good use of it. Rarely were any of us powered up, but we did move over the water most of the time without "kinetics" (ie ooching and pumping! which are NOT allowed!). Paul set off as first boat followed not long after by the pack of Streakers. Pip had agreed to start later than the time he'd been used to in recognition that his handicap rating had changed over the winter. Paul held his station for half the mere, but Tony Ridley was first to go in search of buoy 5 - and on getting close enough, decided wisely that portaging his boat around the stranded/landed buoy, (in amongst the reeds on the western shore) was not an option. Tony rounded somewhere near where the buoy should have been, and it was a matter of conscience for others to follow suit.

By the time Streakers had reached #6, Pip had overhauled them and stretched this lead out as the time progressed. The Albacore had a late start, and only managed to overhaul a couple of boats, but there was a hint more could have been achieved as the fleet went south around the near shallows, and ended up having to tack in almost no wind to make #8. By going north, Dave B was able to make the mark in one hit from #0. Andy Gilding (in Stephen Sharp's SWORDFISH) demonstrated patience and sail trimming to achieve a second - presaging more success later in the day as the wind went even lighter.

The fleet got ashore just in time and a deal of hail rained down during the break between morning and afternoon races. This somewhat deterred Sheila, who stayed ashore whilst the Albacore made another late start! The wind , what there was swung during this race, and between one end of the mere and the other - being NW (the "true" wind?) towards the western end, and SE nearer the club. Choosing which side of the mere made a difference and although stalwarts such as Stuart (always seeming to favour one side or the other rather than the middle) generally went south/left toward #3, on occasions it paid to go north/right. Dave B got into the lead on the water, but lost this to Andy on the final leg of the (mercifully!) shortened course, from #1 to #9 as Andy kept the boat moving no matter the direction! Stuart was some way behind on the water, but the overall length of the race meant that he achieved send place with Jeremy sailing his new Rooster Streaker (with North Dacron sails - easier to read than Mylar!) finding some good speed at times, coming in third on handicap, close on Stuart's heels on the water. Sammi Warner stuck the race out, coming in ahead of Mike Knight. Paul in his Firefly, and three of the Streakers were all very close together on the finish line. Good to see Les and Alan giving the Osprey an airing and no surprise that it really was not their weather!  Pip was OD and can be blamed for the course but not the wind! Ian McIntyre took up Pip's offer of a trial sail in the Blaze and was suitably impressed - maybe we're about the grow that fleet too! Rob Parnaby had taken delivery of his new Streaker during the week and was afloat putting it through its paces. He seemed genuinely
