Streaker Northern Paddle in Association with Sail Register

14/4/12 Hornsea SC

25 Streaker sailors, Including current Fireball world champion and former Streaker national champion Tom Gillard, arrived at a breezy Hornsea SC for the second Northern Paddle meeting in association with Sail Register.

The first race got underway in a low force 4 with a short start line forcing the fleet together. Veronica Falat was the winner of the first beat, leading Tom Gillard around the windward mark. However this was short lived as by the 3rd leg Tom had claimed the lead. The rest of the fleet remained very close with places being swapped on every leg, with some faster sailors who got caught out on the short line making their way back through the fleet. Progress was difficult thanks to the wind shifting to the north, turning the entire course into very close reaches and runs. Tom Gillard pulled away to a clear win whilst Phillip David made Veronica work hard for 2nd place. Relative new comer to the series Tom Whitehead came home in 4th with series regular David Smith a close 5th.

Race two got underway in similar conditions on a new course better suited to wind direction. Another short start line caused chaos for some as the fleet battled for line honours, Stuart Hoare, at his first Streaker open, capsizing on the line. As the fleet raced for the windward mark, Gillard came out on top, closely followed by Whitehead, Falat and the rest of the fleet. Things remained close on the run across the lake and on the following reach. Ian Bradley and Nick Lovell, fighting hard for 5th and 6th got a little too close coming round onto the second beat on the lap, with Lovell catching Bradley's transom. This allowed Matt Whitfield to take advantage and leap frog Lovell, Bradley and Falat. Whitfield approaching the mark on starboard then took Phillip David and Tom Whitehead to claim 2nd place. As Gillard sailed away to another clear win, Whitehead, Falat and Whitfield fought a close battle, with Whitehead taking 2nd, Falat 3rd and Whitfield 4th, with Lovell recovering to 5th.

The final race of the day saw Tom Gillard again manage a clean start, although he was closely followed by Tom Whitehead, the rest of the fleet tightly packed behind. Gillard made a break on the long run across the lake with Whitehead managing to keep the gap smaller than in previous races. Racing remained close throughout the rest of the fleet with some small gaps opening up towards the end of the race. Phillip David and Veronica Falat continued their fight over 3rd spot with David finally managing to beat Falat. Stuart Hoare managed his best result of the day in 5th.

Overall Tom Gillard won the day with a clean sweep and two 2nd place finish’s for Tom Whitehead secured 2nd overall. Veronica Falat rounding out the medal positions in 3rd with another good performance. Thanks to the generosity of Hornsea SC and the Streaker Class Owners Association the prizes stretched as far down the fleet as 7th place Stuart Hoare, who received a Streaker Burgee for his efforts.

The SCOA and its members would like to thank Hornsea SC for hosting another great meeting and Sail Register for backing the paddle series. The next Northern Paddle meeting is to be held at Yorkshire Ouse SC on Saturday 28th of April.
